Public Sector Workshop 13 June 2019

GBTA Southern Africa hosted the Public Sector Workshop at the CSIR in Pretoria on the 13 June 2019. The event was well attended with over 110 attendees from all sectors of the Travel Industry.

The mission of the GBTA Southern Africa board is to Communicate| Connect | Collaborate and the strategy for this event was to engage with the travel industry to understand the frustrations and challenges generate a report to identify challenges and understand how changes to the Travel Policy within the Government departments has affected the industry.

Phale Naake,  Deputy Director: Fleet & Travel Management Services of Department of Labour and a Board Member of the GBTA SA, moderated both sessions. Leading players in the Travel Management Sector were given the opportunity to discuss the impact of the introduction of the National Treasury Travel Reforms in 2013 on the Travel Industry.

It was suggested that Cost containment can be achieved by making sure officials adhere to policies and not by taking from the TMC livelihood with the industry.  The feeling was that the TMC’s are doing more transactions for less money and this cannot be a sustained as a viable business model.

The Broader Industry panel was invited to share their concerns and their views on the decision of Government to introduce Online Booking Tool for all Government Sectors.  The overall feeling was that this is the correct decision and the only way forward.  Government must however engage with the industry as a whole, including TMCs, airlines, car hire and of course SME’s and it was stressed the importance to use existing local tools.

Broader Industry Panel

The travel industry would like to see regular opportunities for all the players within the travel space to meet with National Treasury to discuss impacts and changes within the travel industry.  The purpose of the meeting would be to assist government to achieve savings and make educated decisions and drive compliance.
